B-goods reindeer hide
B-goods hide: These hides have some cosmetic defects such as small spots without hair that are often not visible from the fur side. There may also be other small defects that make us sell these a little cheaper than ordinary. No right of complaint.
Our hides are nailed and dried in the old traditional way that we have learned from the Sami culture. Each individual hide is nailed up in tension according to the natural shape of the hide where it hangs until dry. All hides are scraped and brushed by hand.
Approximate sizes measured along the back:
Calf: 100-120 cm
Adult: 120-150 cm
Large buck: 150-180+ cm
The sizes are approximate. May vary slightly, as we measure the rails before they are trimmed. The sizes are based on an overall assessment of both length and width.
Leather color will vary. Please include your desired color and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes.
A dried reindeer hide should not be confused with prepared, tanned or impregnated leather. If you are going to use a reindeer hide for outdoor use, it must either be dried or impregnated, we prefer dried as it weighs less and works just as well. To further impregnate dry hides, you can paint boiled linseed oil on the leather side.
Dried leather is durable and water-resistant. It gives off a lot of heat and weighs little. Works great on a winter hike! For example, on the ground, in a hammock or in a tent. It takes a lot of moisture over time before the moisture penetrates and is felt on the fur on the upper side. This can be avoided by using another substrate between the leather and the ground. Dried reindeer leather does not shed in principle, but the reindeer's hair is hollow and can therefore break. This can be experienced as shedding. You must also remember that this is a 100% natural product from an animal. Some people think that dried leather smells a lot, but this can be largely avoided with proper maintenance.
A dried reindeer hide must be dried well after use. This is done by hanging it up in an airy and dry place under a roof or, for example, in a shed. It must not be stored in plastic for a long time. If you are not careful about this, you will end up with a hide that starts to shed and smell.
It is important that you follow our maintenance instructions to prevent the leather from turning sour and starting to shed. We check all our leathers before they are shipped. We cannot take responsibility for the product after it has been used. If there is anything that does not look right when you receive it, please contact us immediately.
Recommended sizes for different applications
Calf: Perfect as an extra large sitting pad, sleeping pad for children, sleeping pad for dogs, day trip skins, etc. This skin takes up little space and weighs very little.
Adult: Our best-selling and easiest-to-use skin. Perfect size for most uses. Fits well as a sleeping pad for most adults. Both in a tent, hammock or under a tarp. Fits well on your backpack and weighs little.
Large buck: If you like plenty of space and want to cover your entire body with the reindeer skin, this is the size for you. Great for covering most of the tent base, scooter sled, lavvo, on the floor, etc. Also works well on the backpack, but this takes up a lot of space and weighs a few kg. This size is rarely large, and is therefore available in small quantities at each slaughter.
